Christine Martell Fort Collins, Colorado
poplar, cut book pages, hemp and encaustic 21 x 5 x 5 © 2012 $400 I have been repurposing books for about three years. My work combines cut up books with wood working and encaustic. I want form to be the most important element and content seems to just fall into place. I love the intimacy of these pieces that are never large. Encaustic and cutting through pages obscures the text and makes them somewhat mysterious. While technology has been taking a serious bite into book publishing I think my work gives books back a piece of nobility enshrining them in a new form. Christine Martell was born in Boulder and lives and works in Fort Collins. She has a BFA in Sculpture (1971) and an MFA in Painting (1987) from Colorado State University. She has been an instructor in the Colorado State University Art Department for 13 years. |
